In 1922, naturalist Henry A. Snow established the Oakland Zoo, originally located in downtown Oakland. Since expanding to its current location in 1939, the Oakland Zoo is home to over 700 native and exotic animals that live in expansive natural habitats including chimpanzees, sun bears, elephants, lions, giraffes and more. Many of the Oakland Zoo’s animals are rescues. Nationally, the zoo is known for its excellent elephant exhibit which allows their elephants to roam freely.
